Better Food in Hospitals
We’re supporting hospitals to put good food at the heart of health and wellbeing. With our help, more NHS Trusts are sourcing fresh, local and organic food to meet their budgets, giving staff, visitors, and patients the opportunity to eat well.
When you’re ill in hospital, good food is vital for your recovery.
Yet, our research shows that, in some hospitals, food served to patients is just not good enough.
Over half of patients and their family members told us that they wouldn't feed hospital food to a child, and nearly a quarter had their meals brought to them by their relatives.
This has to change – and with your support it is. We are working with hospitals to improve the food they serve, and to champion and spread good practice.
Food for Life Hospital Leaders
Changing hospital food is not just about what ingredients are on the plate. The whole hospital needs to be involved in ensuring that only healthy food is served. Support from the Big Lottery Fund has helped us to develop our Food for Life hospitals programme and we’re now working with everyone from hospital catering staff to chief executives.

Food for Life Catering Mark
How can you be sure hospital food is good for you?
Our Food for Life Catering Mark provides an independent guarantee that menus are freshly prepared, sustainable, seasonal and better for animal welfare.
NHS England says the Catering Mark is a best practice standard for hospitals. Now, over 10,000 meals are served in hospitals every day that meet Catering Mark bronze standards.
And, with your support, we’re making sure more hospitals work to achieve the award for food served to their patients and visitors.
