Save Our Antibiotics
Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, antibiotics have revolutionised modern medicine and saved millions of lives. But the way we overuse antibiotics is undermining their ability to help treat infection and disease.
In both human medicine and farming, antibiotics are bought, sold and used with abandon, resulting in the emergence and spread of bacteria resistant to these life-saving drugs.
We are quickly approaching a post-antibiotic era where common infections will once again become serious killers.
In Britain alone an estimated 10,000 people die each year from antibiotic resistance illnesses, and experts fear these diseases could cause one million deaths across Europe by 2025.
There must be a fundamental change in our current farming model. Good hygiene, husbandry and housing must be prioritised in order to reduce the need for antibiotics in the first place.
Indiscriminate use of antibiotics to compensate for unsustainable farming practices must stop.
As part of the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics, we are pushing for drastic reductions in farm antibiotic use, and demanding the Government put a stop to needless ‘preventative’ mass medication. We also are calling for annual national surveillance data on the human health impacts of antibiotic resistance.
Will you safeguard antibiotics for future generations?
